What it
usually means.
Self-clean heats the empty cavity far above any baking setting and locks the door until it cools. It depends on the door lock, the temperature sensor and the control working together, and the heat itself tests every part of the oven. That is why self-clean both fails to start when one of those parts is unsure and is the moment many ovens lose an element, a thermal fuse or a control. Some ovens also offer a low-heat steam clean, which uses water and works differently.
The 5 causes, cheapest first
Answer these first
Does self-clean refuse to start, or start and then stop?
Does the door lock, or does the lock icon blink?
Is there heavy residue or a big spill left in the oven?
Did the oven stop working after the cycle finished?
Is there a code on the display?

Oven self-clean problems: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.
Remove racks, pans and loose debris, and wipe up large spills before running self-clean.
Make sure the door is closed fully and nothing blocks the latch.
Keep the kitchen ventilated and stay nearby for the whole cycle.
Also worth checking
- If the oven will not heat after self-clean, switch it off at the breaker and leave it off.
- Note any code and the point at which the cycle stopped when you book.
How soon does it need a visit?
Not urgent unless there is smoke from outside the cavity or the oven will not unlock long after it has cooled. If smoke rises from vents or the panel, switch the oven off at the breaker and keep the door shut.

5 things oven self-clean problems turns out to be, from racks, pans or heavy spills left inside to control overheating during the cycle.
The cost guide-
01 no repair
Racks, pans or heavy spills left inside
Many manuals say to remove racks and wipe up large spills first. Thick residue smokes heavily and may not burn away.
-
02 low to moderate
Door lock not confirming
The cycle will not run until the control is sure the door is locked. A failed latch motor or switch stops it before it starts.
-
03 low
Thermal fuse opened by the heat
The extreme heat can open a thermal fuse, especially if the cooling fan or venting is not doing its job. The oven then goes dead or will not heat.
-
04 low
Temperature sensor giving bad readings
A sensor that reads wrong at high heat makes the control stop the cycle and show a code.
-
05 moderate
Control overheating during the cycle
Heat reaching the control panel during a long self-clean can damage the board, and the oven may not respond afterward.
