A home electrical panel in a US hallway with its door open and one large double breaker flipped to the off position, a stainless wall oven visible in the kitchen behind.

Oven
Tripping Breaker

The oven's breaker snaps off when you start preheating, when the broiler comes on, or at a point partway through a bake.

A gas smell means out of the house first; otherwise, breaker off

Treat repeated trips as an electrical risk. Leave the breaker off, do not keep resetting it, and do not use the oven until the short has been found. If there was smoke, a scorched smell or sparks, stay away from the oven and call for help if anything keeps smoldering.

What it
usually means.

A breaker trips to protect the wiring when it sees too much current or a path to ground. On an electric wall oven that nearly always means a heating element, a terminal or a wire is shorting, because the elements draw by far the most power. On a gas oven the breaker feeds only the igniter, lights, fans and controls, so a trip points to one of those. The timing narrows it: a trip the instant bake starts points to the bake circuit, a trip on broil to the top element, and a trip only after a long heat to insulation that gives way when it gets hot.

A new coiled broil element is held up inside the open cavity of a wall oven in a US home kitchen, just below the old blistered element still mounted on the ceiling. The 5 causes, cheapest first

Answer these first

01

Does the breaker trip at the moment you select a mode, or after the oven has been heating for a while?

02

Does it happen in every mode, or only on bake, broil, convection or steam?

03

Is there a flash, a pop or a bright spot on an element before it trips?

04

Does the breaker trip with the oven off, or only when heat is called for?

05

Do other things on the same panel trip as well?

Check these
before you book.

Oven tripping breaker: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Leave the breaker off after it trips; do not reset it more than once to test.

02

If you saw sparks, smoke or smelled burning, keep the oven off and treat it as a fire risk.

03

With the oven cold, look at the bake and broil elements for a split, a blister or a burned spot.

Also worth checking

  • Note which mode was running and how long the oven had been on when it tripped.
  • Say whether the oven is gas or electric when you book, since the likely parts differ.

5 things oven tripping breaker turns out to be, from shorted bake or broil element to worn breaker or panel connection.

The cost guide
  1. 01 low

    Shorted bake or broil element

When an element's outer sheath splits, the coil inside touches it and current runs to ground. Often a blister or a burned-through spot is visible on the element.

  2. 02 low to moderate

    Burned terminal or loose connection

Where the element or supply wires attach, a connection that loosened with heat cycles can arc and then short. Dark marks on the terminals usually give it away.

  3. 03 moderate

Convection element or fan motor short

The ring element around a convection fan and the motor behind it are on their own circuit. A trip only in convection modes points to them.

  4. 04 moderate

Moisture in a steam oven's heater

On a steam or combi-steam oven, water reaching the steam generator's heater or its wiring can trip the breaker, usually when a steam mode starts.

  5. 05 varies

    Worn breaker or panel connection

Breakers wear, and a loose lug at the panel heats up under the oven's load. If the oven tests clean, the circuit itself is the next place to look, and that is work for an electrician.

Questions about
oven tripping breaker.

The breaker held after one reset. Can I go back to using the oven?
It might have been a one-time surge, but an element that is starting to short often trips only once it gets hot. Watch it closely on the next use and stop at the first trip.
Can I tell a bad element by looking at it?
Often, yes. A split sheath, a bulge or a spot that looks burned through are clear signs. An element can also fail inside with no visible mark, which a meter shows.
Why does my gas oven trip the breaker at all?
A gas oven still uses electricity for the igniter, the controls, the light and the fans. A short in any of those trips the breaker, even though the heat comes from gas.
Is it the oven or the house wiring?
An oven that trips only in one mode points to the oven. One that trips even when off, or a breaker that feels warm, points toward the circuit, and that part goes to an electrician.
