What it
usually means.
An electric wall oven heats with a bake element in the floor, a broil element in the roof and, on convection models, a ring element around the rear fan. A gas oven heats with a bake burner lit by an igniter that must get hot enough before the valve opens. When the oven stays cold, either the heat source has failed, the part that switches it on is not doing its job, or the control never asked for heat because a sensor or a safety told it not to. Which mode still works, if any, is the best clue.
The 6 causes, cheapest first
Answer these first
Does broil still heat while bake does not, or is nothing heating at all?
On an electric oven, does the bake element glow red after a few minutes?
On a gas oven, can you see the igniter glow through the floor vents, and does it light?
Does the oven show a code or a preheat timer that never finishes?
Did the problem start after a self-clean or a power outage?
Check these
before you book.
Oven not heating: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.
Clear any timer, delay start or Sabbath setting, then start a plain bake.
Check whether broil heats; if it does, the power supply is fine and the bake side is the problem.
On an electric oven, look at the bake element once it is cold for a split or a burned spot.
Also worth checking
- On a gas oven, watch through the floor vents for the igniter glow; never touch or adjust the gas parts.
- Note any code, and whether the oven is gas or electric, when you book.
How soon does it need a visit?
An oven that stays cold is rarely an emergency. Keep it switched off rather than leaving it preheating for long periods. If a gas oven smells of gas while it fails to light, leave and call the gas utility from outside.

6 things oven not heating turns out to be, from timed bake or delay start set to relay or control board not switching.
The cost guide-
01 no repair
Timed bake or delay start set
A delay start, a Sabbath mode or a timed cook left from an earlier use holds off the heat. Clearing the settings starts it normally.
-
02 low
Burned-out bake element
The most common reason an electric oven will not bake. A break in the element may be visible as a split or a blistered spot, or it may only show on a meter.
-
03 low to moderate
Weak or failed gas igniter
A glow-bar igniter weakens with age until it glows but never gets hot enough to open the gas valve. The oven clicks or glows and stays cold.
-
04 low
Blown thermal fuse
Built-in ovens carry a thermal fuse or limit that cuts heat if the oven overheats. A self-clean, a blocked vent or a stopped cooling fan can open it.
-
05 low
Temperature sensor giving bad readings
If the sensor reads open or shorted, many controls refuse to heat at all and show a code instead.
-
06 moderate
Relay or control board not switching
The control may count the preheat while a relay that should feed the element or the igniter never closes.
