Needs a visit now

An oven that smells of gas, gives off smoke or a hot electrical smell, keeps heating after it was turned off, has cracked or burst door glass, or trips the breaker is a hazard in the kitchen wall, so these sit at the top — each with its likely causes, least expensive first. Cut the power at the breaker. If you smell gas, do not touch a switch: get everyone outside and phone the gas utility from there. If there is smoke or flame inside, keep the door closed.

Everything else we are called out for

Nothing here smells of gas or smoke, and the oven still switches off when told, so a booked slot is normally fine. Every page lists what you can safely look at before the technician arrives.

Oven Not Heating

The oven turns on and the display counts, but the cavity stays cold or only lukewarm after a long preheat.
6 causes

Oven Temperature Not Accurate

Recipes come out burnt or underdone at the right setting, and an oven thermometer reads far from the dial.
5 causes

Oven Slow to Preheat

Preheating takes far longer than it used to, or the oven never quite reaches the set temperature before the timer beeps.
5 causes

Oven Baking Unevenly

Cakes rise on one side, cookies burn at the back or the bottom while the top stays pale.
5 causes

Oven Broiler Not Working

The broil setting starts but the top element stays dark, or the top burner of a gas wall oven will not light.
5 causes

Convection Oven Fan Not Working

In convection modes the fan at the back wall does not turn, turns slowly, or grinds and rattles.
5 causes

Oven Door Won't Unlock

The door stays latched after a self-clean or a steam clean, or it locked during normal baking and will not release.
5 causes

Oven Door Won't Close

The door springs back open, sits crooked, or leaves a gap at the top or one side where heat escapes.
5 causes

Oven Self-Clean Problems

Self-clean will not start, stops part way, leaves the oven dirty, or the oven stops working right after it.
5 causes

Oven Light Not Working

The light inside the oven will not come on with the door open, the light button, or in any mode.
4 causes

Oven Control Panel Not Responding

The touch controls or buttons do nothing, the display is blank, or some keys work and others do not.
5 causes

Oven Error Code

The oven shows letters and numbers, beeps, and stops a cycle or refuses to start one.

The repairs behind the symptoms

Most people arrive knowing what they are seeing, not what is wrong. These are the jobs a visit usually turns out to be.

diagnostic

Diagnostic visit

One visit that turns a cold cavity, a wrong temperature, a locked door or a dead panel into one named part and a price.

low

Bake and broil element repair

An electric oven that stays cold, bakes only from above or will not broil, traced to the element, its terminals or the relay that feeds it.

low

Gas igniter and burner repair

A gas wall oven that clicks, glows or smells of gas without lighting, traced to the igniter, the safety valve or the burner itself.

low

Temperature sensor and calibration

Baking that comes out burnt or pale at the usual setting, traced to the sensor, its wiring or an oven that simply needs calibrating.

low to moderate

Convection fan and motor repair

A convection setting that bakes like a still oven, rattles or squeals, traced to the fan blade, its motor or the ring element behind it.

lowest

Door hinge and gasket repair

A door that drops open, hangs crooked, leaks heat around its edges or has cracked glass, set right with new hinges, a gasket or a pane.

low to moderate

Door lock and self-clean repair

A door that stays locked after self-clean, a cycle that will not start or stops early, traced to the lock motor, its switches or the cleaning heat.

moderate to highest

Controls and sensors

Dead keys, a blank or garbled display, an oven that will not switch off or will not respond, traced to the board, the touch panel or their wiring.

moderate

Steam system repair

A steam or combi-steam oven that makes no steam, weak steam or asks for water it already has, traced to scale, the pump, the generator or the tank sensor.

low

Cooling fan and thermal fuse repair

An oven that shuts off mid-bake, goes completely dead, runs a noisy fan or overheats its controls, traced to the cooling fan or a tripped thermal fuse.

Questions about
the problems.

What my oven is doing is not listed here. Will you still take the job?
Yes. The list covers the complaints we hear most, not every way an oven can misbehave. Tell us what you see, smell or hear when you book, and the technician begins from there.
My oven has two of these problems. Which should I read first?
Begin with the one you noticed first, since the second often follows from it: an oven that heats slowly is frequently one whose bake element has started to fail. Each problem page links to the others it usually comes with.
Which of these are emergencies?
A smell of gas, smoke or a hot electrical smell, an oven that will not switch off, door glass that has cracked or burst, and a breaker that trips when the oven heats. How urgent each one is appears on its own problem page. A dim oven light, uneven browning or a slow preheat can wait for a booked slot.
Can I keep cooking with it until the visit?
Only if there is no gas or burning smell and it still switches off when you tell it to. Stay in the kitchen while it runs and never leave it on when you go out. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside; for anything electrical, switch the oven off at the breaker.
