Thermador ovens,
specifically.

Thermador sells single, double and triple wall ovens, steam ovens and speed ovens. Its wall oven manual does not print a numbered code list: an E and a number on the display comes with instructions, an INFO key for more detail and a request to note the number, while the speed oven names its sensor problems in words.

The Thermador lineup

What is particular
to Thermador.

Thermador's built-in line covers single, double and triple wall ovens, steam and combination steam ovens, and speed ovens. Steam models need altitude calibration and a water-hardness setting, and speed ovens combine microwave with convection, so each type is checked in its own way.

The display explains its own codes

When an E and a number appear and the control beeps, Thermador's manual says to follow the instructions on the display and press INFO for more detail. If the code stays, note the number and switch the oven off before booking a visit.

One self-clean per 24 hours

After a Self Clean cycle, the oven will not start another for 24 hours, and on a double oven a clean in one cavity blocks both. A refused self-clean the day after the last one is by design.

A locked door can reset from the breaker

If the door stays locked after the oven has cooled, Thermador's first step is to switch the breaker off for five minutes; the oven should then reset itself and work again.

Soft-close doors react to temperature

The soft-close hinges contain a damping fluid, so the door closes more slowly in a cold kitchen and a little faster when the room is warm from cooking. A change in closing speed alone is not a hinge problem.

Parts

Controls, door locks and sensors are ordered by the full model number on the rating label. Steam and speed oven parts are more specific and can take longer to arrive.

Repair or replace

Most Thermador wall oven visits end with a lock, sensor, element or control repair, which is worth doing on a cavity in good condition. Replacement deserves a look when a double or triple oven needs a main control on top of other major parts.

Questions about
Thermador ovens.

Why won't my Thermador start Self Clean again?
If a Self Clean ran within the last 24 hours, the oven will not allow another one yet. On a double oven, that rule covers both cavities even if only one was cleaned.
My Thermador lights up but will not heat. What should I check?
Look for the demo mode symbol on the display. Thermador's manual says demo mode stops the oven heating and is switched off in the settings menu.
Does my Thermador steam oven need calibrating?
Yes, after installation. Water boils at a different temperature at different altitudes, so the oven runs a Steam mode at 212 °F for 30 minutes, starting from a cold cavity with the door kept closed.
What water should go in my Thermador steam oven?
Cold, fresh tap water, softened water or noncarbonated mineral water, never distilled water. Set the water hardness range in the oven so it knows when to ask for a descale.
