A gas smell means out of the house first; otherwise, breaker off

Treat this as urgent. An oven that heats on its own can overheat the cabinet and start a fire with nobody there. Cut the power at the breaker, leave it off, and keep the oven off until a technician has found why the heat does not stop.

What it
usually means.

An oven switches its elements or its gas valve through relays on the control board, and those relays only close when the control asks for heat. When an oven keeps heating after it was told to stop, either a relay has welded shut, the control has locked up while calling for heat, or a wire is feeding an element directly. It is one of the few oven problems that cannot be left until morning, because an oven that heats with nobody watching it can overheat the cabinet or anything left inside.

Answer these first

01

Does the display go blank or show off while the oven keeps heating?

02

Is the heat coming from the bottom, the top broil element or the fan area?

03

Does the oven stay hot even with the door open for a minute?

04

Did it start after a power outage, a surge or a self-clean?

05

Does the control respond to any button, or is it frozen?

Check these
before you book.

Oven won't turn off: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Switch the oven off at its breaker right away; for a double oven the breaker usually serves both cavities.

02

Keep the door shut and let the oven cool; take out nothing hot until it has.

03

On a gas oven, if you smell gas at any point, leave and call the gas utility from outside.

Also worth checking

  • After several minutes, restore power once and see whether the oven stays off; if it starts heating again, cut it at once.
  • Leave the breaker off until the visit and say whether the display was working when you book.

5 things oven won't turn off turns out to be, from sabbath or delay mode left on to relay stuck closed on the control board.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

Sabbath or delay mode left on

Some ovens hold heat for long periods in Sabbath mode and ignore normal key presses. The manual lists the key combination that ends it.

  2. 02 low

Frozen control after a power event

A surge or a brief outage can leave the electronics locked in the state they were in. Removing power at the breaker for several minutes often resets them.

  3. 03 low

    Temperature sensor reading too low

If the sensor tells the control the oven is cold, the control keeps heating while the cavity climbs past the setting. This shows up as running far too hot rather than never stopping.

  4. 04 low to moderate

    Shorted wiring to an element

Insulation that melted near a hot surface can let a wire touch another, feeding an element with no switching at all.

  5. 05 moderate

Relay stuck closed on the control board

The contacts in a relay can fuse after years of switching an element. The control thinks the heat is off while the relay keeps feeding power.

Questions about
oven won't turn off.

I cannot find a breaker labeled for the oven. What should I do?
Wall ovens are usually on a double breaker, often larger than the others in the panel. If the labels are missing, switch off the main breaker until the oven cools and call for help.
The oven turned off after I reset the breaker. Is it fixed?
It may have been a frozen control, which a power reset clears. If it happens again, the part behind it is still there. Watch the next few uses and do not leave the oven on unattended.
Can I use the oven by turning it on and off at the breaker?
No. The breaker is a safety device, not a switch for daily use, and an oven that cannot stop by itself should not be left heating.
Is this more likely on a gas or an electric oven?
Both use a control board to switch the heat, so both can have a relay stick. On gas models the board drives the igniter and valve instead of an element.
