What Marina does
to an oven.

The Marina stands on the site of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, staged to celebrate the city's recovery from the 1906 earthquake.

Some earthquake rubble went into the land reclamation, but most of the fill came from mud and sand dredged from the bottom of the bay.

In 1989 the Loma Prieta earthquake liquefied that fill and set off a small firestorm, and firefighters pumped water straight from the bay because water mains had broken.

The Palace of Fine Arts, home of the Exploratorium until 2013, takes up much of the western part of the neighborhood.

Also known as Marina District.

Small kitchens

In a small kitchen the wall oven often shares a tall cabinet with a speed oven or a microwave, and the two sit so close that heat from one reaches the controls of the other. A cooling fan that fails in that stack does more harm than it would in open cabinetry.

On the water

Salt air works its way into a wall oven's touch panel, door lock switches and wiring connectors, and corrosion there can cause ghost presses, errors or a lock that will not release. The main board is often fine once the connections are cleaned or replaced.

Tower living

Tower kitchens are usually all-electric, so the wall oven runs on its own dedicated circuit and a gas oven is rarely an option. When the oven stops heating, the unit's panel and that circuit are checked before the oven itself.
