What the oven diagnostic visit
involves.

An oven diagnostic visit begins with the oven doing what it was bought to do: heating to a set temperature while the technician watches which parts come on and in what order. A wall oven that will not heat, overshoots, locks itself shut or ignores its keys has usually lost one of a short list of parts, and seeing the preheat narrows that list quickly. Supply comes first, meaning the breaker, the voltage at the junction box and, on a gas model, the gas valve and the igniter's glow. Then the stored codes are read and the elements, sensor, lock, fans and relays are measured with a meter. You leave with one failed part named and priced, or with a straight answer that the oven is not worth the money.

How the visit goes

Diagnostic visit,
step by step.

Name the failed part and its price, and say plainly if a rusted cavity, a discontinued board or the oven's age makes the repair a poor buy.

01

Set a bake temperature and follow the preheat, noting which elements or burners come on, how fast the heat rises and where it stops.

02

Check the supply before the oven itself: the breaker and the voltage at the junction box, or the gas shutoff and the igniter on a gas model.

03

Read the codes the control has stored, or run the model's service mode to see what it recorded.

04

Measure the suspect parts, from the bake and broil elements to the temperature sensor, the door lock, the fans and the board's relays, instead of replacing them on a hunch.

05

Name the failed part and its price, and say plainly if a rusted cavity, a discontinued board or the oven's age makes the repair a poor buy.

Tell us this when you book

  1. Whether it is a single, double, steam or speed oven, and whether it runs on gas or electricity
  2. What happens when you set a temperature: nothing, a slow climb, the wrong heat or a shutdown
  3. Any code, beep or flashing word on the display
  4. Whether there is a smell of gas or burning, or the breaker has tripped

A price before
any work.

The scale on this page shows where oven jobs tend to fall, never what yours will cost. An oven that will not heat may have a burned-out element, a weak gas igniter, a failed sensor or a relay that never closes, and nobody can tell which from a description alone. A price named before the oven has been tested is either a guess or padded for the worst case. Here, the price comes once the cause is found and before any part is changed, and you decide whether to go ahead.

Diagnostic visit,
where we come out.

The kitchen, the climate and the building all change how the oven diagnostic visit goes. These notes are about that, metro by metro.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

An oven diagnostic in Tampa Bay often starts at the breaker, because storm-season outages and surges can leave a wall oven's control board confused rather than broken, and a clean power cycle is tried before any part is ordered.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Orlando subdivisions tend to share one builder's appliance package, so the technician notes the wall oven's model and build date, compares it with what similar ovens nearby have needed, and still runs bake and broil to see the symptom on this unit.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

In a Miami tower the wall oven is nearly always electric and boxed into cabinetry, so the diagnostic works from the front: element readings, sensor resistance and the control's stored errors, all inside the hours the building allows for trades.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

A New York diagnostic often happens in a renovated apartment where a narrow wall oven was fitted into a tall cabinet, so the visit confirms it sits on the circuit it was specified for, then watches whether it holds heat through a full preheat.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Many Houston houses pair gas at the cooktop with an electric double wall oven, so a diagnostic first settles which fuel the oven itself uses, then times a preheat in each cavity to find the one that lags behind.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Chicagoland kitchens run from bungalows on decades-old wiring to newly finished North Shore remodels, so a diagnostic measures the supply at the oven's junction box before an element or board takes the blame for slow heating.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

A Los Angeles diagnostic frequently meets a pro-style wall oven, sometimes a gas one, so the visit records the fuel, tests ignition or elements to match, and checks the door seal before reading anything on the display.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

San Diego's water is hard, so a diagnostic on a combi-steam oven there opens with the descaling history and the water path, while a conventional wall oven in the same home gets a measured temperature check against its setting.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area homes built or remodeled in recent years lean all-electric, and older kitchens often hold a single wall oven set into original cabinetry, so the visit confirms the circuit, reads the service history and watches a timed preheat.

Questions about
the oven diagnostic visit.

Does the diagnostic charge count toward the oven repair?
That depends on the company, so ask while you book rather than after. Knowing in advance lets you compare fairly and decide with the full picture.
Can the problem be named over the phone?
Often it can be narrowed. An oven that broils but will not bake points at the bake element or its relay, and a gas oven whose igniter glows without lighting points at the igniter's strength. Naming the exact part still takes a meter reading at the oven.
How long does an oven diagnostic take?
Most wall ovens are diagnosed while they preheat, which is well under an hour. A speed oven or a steam oven that must slide out of its cabinet takes longer, and a double wall oven may need both cavities tested.
Should I clean the oven before the technician arrives?
There is no need to scrub it, but please take out pans, racks and anything stored inside. Leave any spill or burn mark where it is, since it can show where heat or a leak went.
