What it
usually means.

An oven code is the control reporting a check it could not pass: the temperature sensor gave an impossible reading, the oven got hotter than it should, the door lock did not move, a fan did not answer, the gas burner did not light, a steam oven ran short of water, or two boards lost touch with each other. A few codes are not failures at all but modes, such as a Sabbath setting or a demo mode left on from the showroom. The same letters mean different things across brands and even between models of one brand, so a code is only useful together with the model number.

Answer these first

01

What exactly does the display show, including letters that could be numbers?

02

Does the code come back after the breaker is off for several minutes?

03

When does it appear: at start, during preheat, during self-clean or at the end?

04

Is the oven gas, electric, steam or a speed oven?

05

Where is the model label? It is usually on the frame when the door is open.

Check these
before you book.

Oven error code: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Copy the code exactly, and take a photo of the display if you can.

02

Find the model and serial label on the oven frame with the door open.

03

Switch the oven's breaker off for several minutes, then back on, and see if the code returns.

Also worth checking

  • Look up the code in the owner's manual; some are modes, not failures.
  • If the code mentions heat or gas, or you smell gas, stop using the oven before anything else.

How soon does it need a visit?

Plenty of oven codes can wait for the visit. A code that means overheating, or any code with a gas smell, smoke or an oven that will not switch off, is: cut the power at the breaker, and for gas leave and call the gas utility from outside.

6 things oven error code turns out to be, from mode shown as a code to steam, fan or communication code.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

    Mode shown as a code

Sabbath, control lock or demo mode can look like a code on some displays. The manual shows how to exit them.

  2. 02 low

    Temperature sensor code

The sensor reads open, shorted or impossibly high or low. It is one of the most common oven codes.

  3. 03 low to moderate

    Door lock code

The control could not confirm the lock position, often around self-clean.

  4. 04 low to moderate

    Gas ignition code

The burner did not light in time. If you smell gas, leave and call the gas utility from outside.

  5. 05 moderate

    Overheat or runaway temperature code

The oven heated past a safe limit. Switch it off at the breaker and do not restart it until it has been checked.

  6. 06 moderate

    Steam, fan or communication code

A steam oven's water system, a fan or the link between boards did not respond. The part may be fine and the wiring to blame.

Questions about
oven error code.

The code went away after a power reset. Is the oven fixed?
Sometimes a reset clears a glitch from a surge or outage. If the code returns at the same point in a cycle, the part it points to is still failing.
Why does my code mean something different online?
Many pages list codes for other appliances or older models of the same brand. Oven codes change between brands and model families, so match yours to the manual for your model number.
My oven shows a code and will not bake at all. Why?
Many codes lock out heating until the problem clears, so the oven does not heat with a sensor it cannot trust or a door it cannot confirm.
Does a steam oven have its own codes?
Yes. Steam ovens add codes for the water tank, the pump, descaling and the steam generator, alongside the ones any oven has.
