What it
usually means.
An oven locks its door with a motorized latch during self-clean, and some lock during very high heat as well. The latch only releases once the oven has cooled below a safe temperature and the control confirms the latch position through switches. A door that stays locked long after the oven is cool usually means the latch motor, its switch or the control is stuck, or a power interruption left the control unsure of where the latch is. Forcing it can break the latch or the glass.
The 5 causes, cheapest first
Answer these first
How long ago did the self-clean or the high-heat cycle finish?
Is the lock light or icon still on, or blinking?
Did the power go off during the cycle?
Do you hear a motor trying to run when you press cancel?
Does the oven show a code about the door or lock?
Check these
before you book.
Oven door won't unlock: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.
Let the oven cool fully, well beyond the end of the cycle, before trying again.
Press cancel or clear and wait to hear whether the latch motor runs.
Switch off the oven's breaker for several minutes, then restore it and try cancel again.
Also worth checking
- Do not pry the door or force the handle; it can break the latch or the glass.
- Say whether a self-clean was running and whether the power went out when you book.
How soon does it need a visit?
Not urgent unless food or a dish is trapped inside, or the oven is still hot long after the cycle. Leave it closed, keep it off, and try a power reset once it is cool.

The cost guide-
01 no repair
Oven still cooling after self-clean
The latch waits until the cavity is cool enough to open safely, which takes a while after a self-clean. Waiting is the fix.
-
02 low to moderate
Door lock motor or latch failed
The small motor that drives the latch can seize or strip, often at the end of a self-clean when the heat has been hardest on it.
-
03 low
Lock switch reporting the wrong position
Switches on the latch tell the control whether it is locked. One that sticks leaves the control convinced the door must stay shut.
-
04 low
Control confused after a power loss
A power interruption during a cycle can leave the control holding the lock. A reset at the breaker often lets it run the latch again.
-
05 low
Temperature sensor reading hot
If the sensor reports heat that is not there, the control keeps the door locked for safety.
