What it
usually means.

The oven light is a heat-rated bulb, often a halogen, behind a glass cover in the wall or roof of the cavity, switched by the door or a button. Most of the time a dark oven is just a burned-out bulb, which the owner's manual shows how to change. When a new bulb does not help, the door switch, the socket, the wiring or the control is the next place to look, and the same door switch may also be telling the control whether the door is open.

Answer these first

01

Does the light fail with both the door and the light button?

02

Is the bulb visibly dark, cloudy or broken?

03

Does the light work in one cavity of a double oven but not the other?

04

Does the convection fan or the oven behave strangely when you open the door?

05

Did you replace the bulb recently?

4 things oven light not working turns out to be, from burned-out bulb to control not powering the light.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

    Burned-out bulb

Oven bulbs wear out like any other. Use the type the manual lists, since ordinary household bulbs are not made for oven heat.

  2. 02 low

    Door switch worn

The switch that turns on the light when the door opens can wear or stick. It may also affect the convection fan.

  3. 03 low

Socket or wiring damaged by heat

The socket sits close to the cavity heat and can crack or burn, especially after self-clean.

  4. 04 moderate

    Control not powering the light

On electronic controls the light has its own output. A good bulb and socket with no power point to the board.

Questions about
oven light not working.

Can I use a regular bulb in my oven?
No. Oven bulbs are made to take the heat inside the cavity. A regular bulb can fail quickly or break. Use the type the manual lists.
The glass cover will not come off. What should I do?
Some covers twist and others unclip, and they can stick after heat cycles. Wear a glove for grip with the oven cold and off, and do not pry with metal tools.
Why did the bulb burn out so fast?
Leaving the light on during long bakes or self-clean shortens it. If new bulbs keep failing quickly, the socket may be the issue.
Does a broken light affect cooking?
Not by itself. If the door switch is the cause, though, the convection fan may also stop, since some ovens use one switch for both.
