When the sensor drifts, the oven keeps a steady temperature that is steadily wrong, and recipes that always worked begin to burn or stay underdone. A sensor that fails outright usually brings up a code and stops the oven from heating. Put an oven thermometer on the middle rack, set a moderate bake temperature, and read it several times over half an hour after the preheat tone. Every oven swings above and below its setting as it cycles, so look at the average rather than a single reading. ### Can I calibrate my oven myself? On most modern wall ovens, yes. The settings menu has a temperature adjustment that shifts the oven up or down by a few degrees. If the oven is off by more than that setting can correct, or the error keeps changing, the sensor needs testing. ### Can a bad sensor make the oven overheat? Yes. A sensor that reads low tells the control the oven is still cool, and the elements keep heating. That is why a sensor code usually stops the oven, and why an oven that runs far too hot is switched off until it is checked. ### Why is my oven fine for roasting but bad for baking? Cakes and cookies show a temperature error that a roast hides.
