A convection oven moves hot air with a fan behind the rear panel, usually wrapped by its own ring element. The fan is meant to start as the convection mode begins, sometimes after a short delay and often pausing when the door opens. When it stops, baking in convection becomes uneven and slow, and some ovens show a code. A fan that grinds or wobbles is usually a worn motor or a blade that has come loose, and running it that way wears the motor further. Usually not. That is the cooling fan pushing heat out of the controls and cabinet, and it can run for a while after cooking. The convection fan is behind the rear panel inside the cavity. ### Why does the fan stop when I open the door? Most ovens pause the convection fan and element when the door opens, so hot air does not blow out at you. It should restart when you close the door. ### Can a speed oven's fan fail the same way? Yes. A speed oven uses a convection fan in its baking modes and can lose it in the same ways. The rest of the oven may still work. ### Should I oil a noisy convection fan? No. The motor sits behind the oven wall and is not meant to be oiled.
