# Where the model tag hides on a wall oven

The wall oven model number is printed on a tag or rating plate on the oven's front frame, visible once the door is open: on the side trim or the mounting rail beside the cavity, or along the top of the opening. On a double wall oven it is usually on the lower oven's frame. It identifies the exact build, its manual, its parts and any recall.

## At a glance.

A wall oven hides everything but its door and its control panel, and the tag that names it is no exception. It is almost always on the metal frame you only see with the door wide open.

### Single wall oven On the frame behind the door

Side trim, the right mounting rail or the top of the opening, depending on the maker.

### Double wall oven Usually on the lower oven

GE and Monogram put the label on the front of the lower cavity, behind its door.

### Also on the tag Voltage and kilowatt rating

The same plate tells an electrician what circuit the oven needs.

## Why the number matters more than the brand name

The badge on the door names the maker and sometimes a series, but a single wall oven design is built in many versions, with different control boards, elements, door locks and even different cavity sizes. Only the wall oven model number separates them. It opens the right use and care manual, the installation instructions with the cutout sizes, and the parts list a technician orders from.

It also decides whether a replacement will fit the cabinet. When an oven is past repair, the cutout dimensions for the old model are the starting point for choosing a new one that slides into the same opening without cabinet work.

## Where to look on each kind of built-in oven

Open the door fully, pull the top rack out of the way and shine a flashlight around the face of the frame that the door closes against. The tag is a thin metal plate or a printed sticker, silver or white, with several lines of small type. The makers publish slightly different spots:

- GE: on the side trim, or on the front of the oven frame behind the door; on a double oven, on the lower oven.
- GE Monogram: on the front of the oven behind the door, or of the lower oven on a double.
- Whirlpool: along the top of the cavity opening, with the rating plate on the right mounting rail.
- Other brands: the same frame faces, the edges of the trim or the underside of the control panel above the door.

### Single wall ovens

With the door open, check the left and right edges of the frame first, then the strip along the top of the opening. On ovens with a thick trim kit, the tag may sit on the side of the frame, where you have to look sideways into the gap between the trim and the door.

### Double wall ovens and oven combinations

A double oven usually carries one tag for both cavities, and it is normally on the lower one. Open the lower door, not the upper. An oven paired with a built-in microwave or a warming drawer is two or three appliances in one cabinet, and each part has its own tag; Whirlpool puts a warming drawer's tag on the left side of the drawer's cabinet wall.

### Steam and speed ovens

Compact steam and speed ovens follow the same idea on a smaller frame. Open the door, look around the opening and along the top strip, and on a steam oven check the area around the water tank bay as well. If the oven sits above a warming drawer or beside a second oven, make sure the tag you copy belongs to the unit that has the problem.

## Reading the plate: model, serial and rating

The line to copy is marked Model, Mod. or Type. Copy the serial number below it as well: it identifies this particular oven and its build date, which matters for recalls and for parts changed partway through production. The same plate lists the voltage, often 240 and 208 volts, and the power rating in kilowatts, which is what an electrician uses to size the circuit.

Small characters are where errors creep in, and a single wrong one brings up a different oven:

- A capital O read as a zero, or a zero read as O
- The letter B and the digit 8
- The letter Z and the digit 2
- Suffix letters after a dash, which often mark the color or finish and still belong to the number

## When the tag has faded or burned off

Self-clean cycles run the cavity far hotter than any baking, and years of them can darken or blister a sticker near the door opening. Check the other frame faces before giving up, and try photographing the tag with the flash at an angle, which often picks up embossed characters on a metal plate that the eye misses.

If nothing is legible, the paperwork usually has it: the manual, the installation sheet taped inside a cabinet, the purchase receipt, a delivery invoice or the registration record if the oven was ever connected to the maker's app. A technician can identify an unlabeled oven from its parts, but that uses part of the visit.

## Manuals, parts and recalls

With the number in hand, the maker's support site will return the owner's manual, which holds the calibration steps, the rack chart and the list of display messages for your oven. Save a copy on your phone, since the paper one tends to vanish the day it is needed.

The number is also how you check for a safety recall. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission publishes recalls with the affected model numbers, and a match means following the recall remedy rather than booking a repair.

It helps outside the kitchen too. When you book a visit, give the model and serial numbers with a short note of the problem, and the technician can check which parts that build uses before leaving the shop. Keep the numbers with your home records, since an insurance claim, a move or a kitchen remodel will ask for them again.

## Where to stop

Reading the tag never needs tools, and it is done with the oven cool and switched off. Do not remove the trim, the control panel or the oven from its cutout to hunt for a label; a wall oven is heavy and wired into the cabinet. If the only tag is on the back of the oven, leave it for the visit.

## Step by step.

Four steps, in the order worth doing them.

01

### Open the door fully

On a double oven, open the lower door; move the top rack aside.

02

### Scan the frame

Left and right edges, the top strip of the opening and the side trim.

03

### Photograph the plate

A sharp photo of the model, serial and rating lines, flash at an angle.

04

### Look it up and save it

Find the manual and check the CPSC recall list, then keep both with the photo.

For the heart of your home.

## Questions owners ask.

### Is the number on the control panel the model number?

Usually not. Numbers on the display glass or the badge are often a series or feature name. The model number is on the tag on the frame, marked Model.

### My double oven has two tags. Which one do I give?

Give the one marked Model, and if both cavities carry one, give both. A combination with a microwave or warming drawer has a separate tag for each part.

### Can I find the model number from the serial number?

Makers can often trace one from the other, but there is no simple rule for doing it yourself. Copy both lines whenever you can read them.
