Why the bake turned out like that

# Common problems guides.

What an oven is telling you when it preheats slowly, browns unevenly, runs hot or cold, or will not heat at all.

## Common problems, guide by guide.

This section begins with what the oven did at dinnertime: a cavity that stayed cold while the display counted down, a tray of cookies burned along one edge, a cake that took twenty minutes longer than the box promised. Each guide explains how a built-in oven makes and holds its heat, so the symptom becomes a clue to follow rather than a reason to panic.

A half-tripped breaker, a lock or Sabbath mode, a burned-out element or a weak gas igniter: how to tell which one left the cavity cold.

Crowded pans, foil on the floor, dark bakeware and the wrong rack cause most patchy browning before an element, a fan or a door seal does.

A new oven that bakes differently, an old one that has drifted, or a sensor, relay or seal that has failed, and how the calibration setting fits in.

## Why the bake turned out like that.

The guides move from the causes an owner can confirm from the front of the oven, such as a mode left on, foil on the floor or a rack set too high, toward the parts that sit behind the panels: elements, igniters, the temperature sensor and the relays that switch them. They also point out where single, double, steam and speed ovens behave differently, because a problem in one cavity of a double oven tells a different story from the same problem in a single one.

A smell of gas, smoke inside the cavity, or an oven that keeps heating after it is switched off is not a common problem to puzzle over. Turn the oven off at its breaker, keep the door closed if anything is smoking, and for gas leave the house and call the gas utility from outside, then read the gas, fire and burn safety section.

### The short answer Why an oven won't heat, from the breaker to the element

When an oven won't heat, the cause is usually one of four things: a tripped or half-tripped breaker on the oven's own circuit, a mode that keeps the elements off on purpose (demo, control lock, Sabbath or delay start), a burned-out bake or broil element or a weak gas igniter, or a control relay or temperature sensor that stops the heat reaching the cavity.

### The short answer Why baking comes out uneven, and what the tray is telling you

An oven baking unevenly is most often starved of airflow: pans too close to each other or to the walls, foil covering a rack or the cavity floor, dark pans beside shiny ones, or the wrong rack height.

### The short answer Why an oven runs hot or cold, and when an offset will fix it

An oven runs hot or cold for three kinds of reasons: it bakes differently from the oven it replaced, its temperature has drifted with age and needs a calibration offset from the settings menu, or a part has failed, usually the temperature sensor, a control relay, a weak element or igniter, or a door that leaks heat.

## Questions about common problems.

### What oven problem do you see most often?

An oven that will not heat or heats slowly, and a fair share of those turn out to be a tripped half of the breaker or a mode such as control lock or Sabbath rather than a failed part.

### Are double wall ovens more prone to trouble than single ones?

Each cavity has its own elements and sensor, so there are more parts to wear, but they share one control. When only one cavity misbehaves, that usually narrows the search rather than widening it.

### Should I keep using the oven while I sort out the problem?

For baking tests the guides describe, yes. If the oven trips its breaker, smells of burning wiring or keeps heating when it is off, leave it switched off at the breaker until it has been checked.
